Why most notes don’t survive till exam day

Mind maps — for subjects with branching ideas
Some topics aren’t linear — a chapter on the French Revolution, a biology unit on the human circulatory system, or a civics chapter on the structure of government all branch outward from one central idea. For these, a mind map beats a page of bullet points because it mirrors how the topic is actually connected.
Start with the central concept in the middle of the page, draw branches for major sub-topics, and keep further branches for details under each one. Use short words or phrases on each branch rather than full sentences — the map should be scannable in seconds, not read line by line.
A note on colour
Colour should carry meaning, not decoration. Pick a small, fixed system — for example, blue for definitions, orange for dates or numbers, green for examples — and reuse it across every subject. A rainbow page with no logic behind the colours takes longer to make and gives back nothing extra at revision time.
The outline method — for text-heavy subjects
For subjects like History, Civics, or English literature, where content moves through paragraphs of explanation, the outline method keeps structure without turning notes into a copy of the textbook. Headings carry the main idea, sub-points under each heading carry supporting detail, and further indentation carries examples or exceptions. The indentation itself becomes a visual map of what’s more important and what’s supporting detail.

Write notes in your own words — always
Copying a textbook sentence word for word feels productive but skips the one step that actually builds memory: processing the idea enough to restate it. Before writing anything down, pause and ask “what is this actually saying?” — then write that answer, not the original sentence. It takes a few extra seconds per line and saves hours at revision time, because the notes are already in a form the brain finds easy to recall.
The one-sentence test
After writing a note, try to explain that line out loud in one sentence without looking at the page. If it’s easy, the note is well-written. If it’s hard, the note was probably copied rather than understood.
Make revision part of the note, not a separate step
Notes are most useful when they’re built to be tested, not just re-read.
